A memorial portrait of two wonderful farm dogs.

The Old Farm on Old Fredericksburg Road
Commissioned oil painting on linen canvas
By Kristy McNelly
36” x 24”
The view of the old buildings from the road evokes a memory of past lives. Working fields with horse drawn plows, trying to get the hay up before the rains come. Chickens that used to run around the barnyard pecking at the grass. The family dog that never needed a proper fence to stay home. The old barn wood withers away with time. The windmill no longer has a job but still stands high above the land, overlooking it like a storyteller of all the people who once farmed this property.
This painting was a commission, and the photographer was the collector who asked me to paint his image. When I saw his photograph, I immediately recognized the old farm.
I asked many people about the history and received quite a few stories about it. I also googled the address and learned some interesting information. In the end, it doesn’t matter who lives there now. Who used to live there, or who might live there in the future. As a painting, it’s the feeling of the old farm. It’s the awe you get whe the storm has passed and the sun hits the clouds just right to remind you of our great creator. This farmland could be sold off tomorrow and a subdivision may replace it. For now, I’m just enjoying the nostalgia of the feeling.

White Pelicans

A Christmas commission was given yesterday by a collector to his grandmother. I heard that the recipient was overjoyed with her custom designed white pelican painting with spoonbills in the background.

I really enjoyed painting the birds. For me it was all about the light from the setting sun over the marsh and how the feathers and grass and trees catch the highlights and shadows.

The size is 20″ x 16″ on stretched canvas.

Dubrovnik, Croatia Cat

This was a commissioned oil painting I made for my nephew to give to his wife. He wanted something that would remind her of their recent trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia. A love for cats, the cat in this painting is the center of attention while the bay with boats, and historic buildings and churches with their orange tiled roofs are in the background.  The size is 20″ x 10″ on stretched canvas.

Hugo

This was a memorial commission. I was honored to paint this portrait of Hugo, a beloved dog who was owned by a woman in Madison, Wisconsin. This painting was commissioned by her boyfriend and he surprised her with it on her birthday. He will forever be remembered for his smile that went from ear to ear.

Uncle’s Buck

This was a commissioned oil painting I recently finished of a majestic whitetail buck. It was painted for a customer who provided me with a few photos of the actual deer and an idea for the hill country scene with mesquite trees and cactus. He wanted to give it to his uncle who finally shot the deer after trying for 4 years. The unique rack is non-typical with one tine dropping downward. The size is 20″ x 20″ on linen stretched canvas.

Tucker

This was a commissioned oil painting I made for a young girl that was about to graduate high school and go off to college. She would be missing the family dog while away from school so this painting was a little special reminder of who loves her most at home.

Below: Dave & Yolanda’s beloved dog.

Art Gray Racing

This was a commissioned oil painting I made for a close friend who’s father was in a nursing home. She wanted a painting of him racing that he could put on his wall to remember the good times. My father, Jack Sanderson raced with Art too and Art helped my dad out at the farm for many years. Some paintings just touch your heart.

Precious Kitties

Original Oil painting on canvas
by Kristy McNelly
20” x 16”

A surprise commissioned piece from Bill Grimm for his girlfriend Wendy of two precious kitties. The right one is an exotic shorthair. The left one has polydactyl paws. Billy brought Wendy by the house today to pick up the painting …telling her he needed to stop by and look at a pipe to fix…lol…and she saw the painting on our wall ….she was surprised!

Contessa was an amazing 25 year old cat with a deep old soul that Kristy painted for Dave and Yolanda in honor of her long and amazing life.
